Throughout my college experience and then again in grad school I spent a fairly good amount of time getting together and drinking with friends. However, drinking, and especially drinking often and drinking tasty beverages, gets expensive fast. Very fast if you were me in college since I like things that have good taste. This was manageable when I was paying for my own booze at a bar, but became a challenge when hosting an amazing party on a tight budget. Well, what are one’s options? BYOB? Do you want to look like a cheap bastard? Why are you even hosting a party if you’re not taking care of all aspects? Plus there’s a quid pro quo regarding parties, there are only so many you can attend before you have to throw one. That is unless you’re a douche.

Worry no longer, I have a solution. Jesus may have turned water into wine, but here is a way to turn the crappy wine of your choice into something great something legendary.

First, this works very well with either Carlo Rossi or Manischewitz. Moreover, this is completely scalable to the number of friends you have or really how much they can drink.

The Basics:

Now, for every 2 liters of wine, add-

2 cups of Vodka (and not McCormick’s)
1 can of Fresca
1 small can of sliced pineapple (in juice and not syrup)
1 small can of mandarin oranges (in juice and not syrup)
1 small can of sliced peaches (in juice and not syrup)

The process is almost simpler than having fun at the party (which is really just one step: drink the punch, a lot.)

First, the morning or day before the shin-dig, empty all the ingredients into a large vessel (depending on the volume you’d like to make; I’ve always said the more the merrier). Then, just let it sit in a refrigerated spot for several hours and let the flavors come together. The time is directly proportional to the volume you’re making. The last thing to do is to place the punch into a serving vessel.

Now, this is just the start. A twist can be to add in grapefruit slices or pears. Also, fresh fruit (which does taste better) can always be used. However, it is more time consuming and expensive. Moreover, a great twist is made with white wine and melons sans vodka which is perfect for the summer.

Next: The holy trinity of summer drinks: the Mojito, ice-pick & “Mary” drink.

-See you at the party

Spirits Ep. #3 – w/ guest David Hopkins

with 2 comments

Hey Everyone, sorry for the late episode, but I got hit with a bout of bronchitis, which almost made the change to pneumonia, so I was out of commission for bit, but we are back.

From our prior post, you already know that we interviewed comic writer and essayist David Hopkins at Uptown Pub near downtown.  We chat with David about some of his books, writing comics for D Magazine and The Quick, his indie show for Fanboy radio and One Night Stand, the book he put together for Indie Comic Week, which showcases much of the great comic talent from around and outside of Dallas.

Also, David will have a table at the Dallas Comic Con this weekend, January 30th and 31st.  So be sure to stop by, say hi and check out his work!

As ya’ll may have seen we shot episode 3 recently at Uptown Pub with David Hopkins. While we work on editing that and getting it out the door we thought we’d give you a sneak preview of what was to come. David Hopkins if you haven’t already found is a comic writer for quite a few different comics including one published by D Magazine.

Since the holidays have rolled around and comic book stores are still open but distributors don’t ship David organized the local talent here in Dallas for a special comic to come out next week (the week of December 28th – January 1)

You can find more details on indy comic book week’s website (click on the comic book preview art) or on David Hopkins‘ site or better yet your local comic book store.

Preview of one of the comics in the comic released this week

The rest of the interview…well you’ll just have to wait. I know I’m teasing you a bit, if I didn’t you wouldn’t come back and watch now would you.

Spirits Episode #2 – Guest: Mona Kasra – Part 1

Spirits Episode #2 – Guest: Mona Kasra – Part 2

Spirits Episode #2 – Guest: Mona Kasra – Part 3

Meeting Mona Kasra at the Elbow Room in Dallas was such a blast. Mona is a joy to talk to about nearly everything especially her upcoming panel in South by Southwest’s  2010 Interactive Festival. Her last major piece, “Click:Play”, was screened at VideoFest Dallas, one of the oldest video festivals in the United States.

The Elbow Room is such a relaxed and great place to meet with pool tables and a great menu to relax and meet friends it was a great place to chat with Ms. Mona about her thoughts on her next hurdles she’s giving herself. Dealing with emotions and all she’s looking to create an installation piece next and could always use audience participation.

Find Mona on twitter: @monaism

See you at the bar.
